We are thrilled to introduce and celebrate our outstanding VISTA graduates of Spring 2024! Each of these students has contributed significantly to their respective projects and the UC Merced community. Let us take a moment to recognize their achievements and learn about their future aspirations.

Adam Mercado

Adam has contributed his skills to the UC Merced Experimental Smart Farm (ESF) as a student systems specialist, under the mentorship of Danny Royer, Farm and Greenhouse Coordinator and Grower. His favorite UC Merced memory was attending the UCM Grad Fair. Adam is receiving a B.S. in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Immunology & Microbiology. Post-graduation, he plans to travel to Waikiki, Hawaii, and work towards becoming a graduate researcher.

Lexie Calderon

Lexie has been a valuable Communications Intern with Secure Water Future (SWF), also mentored by Sarah Naumes. Her journey at UC Merced has been marked by significant contributions to her team and the broader community.

Michael Tapia

Michael has been an integral part of VISTA as a student web developer for the Fall ‘23 and Spring ‘24 semesters. His favorite UC Merced memory is meeting incredible people and diving into the world of web development at VISTA, his first real-world experience in his field. Mentored by VISTA F3 Executive Director, Dr. Leigh Bernacchi, Michael is receiving a B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering. He is now ready to embark on his next adventure: finding his dream job!

 

Wendy Haw

Wendy has made significant strides working with Secure Water Future (SWF) as a student researcher, mentored by Sarah Naumes, Managing Director of SWF. Her favorite UC Merced memory includes spending time with close friends, whether it was a late-night study session or grabbing a meal together. Wendy is receiving a B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering and will continue her work with SWF to publish a case study. She will also continue her role with the AgAID Institute as the Internship Coordinator.

Austin Mercado

Austin, also a vital part of the UC Merced Experimental Smart Farm (ESF) as a student systems specialist, has been mentored by Danny Royer. His favorite memory is the late-night walks back to Bellevue Lot, enjoying the campus buildings lit up like a massive light show. Austin is receiving a B.S. in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Molecular & Cellular Biology. After graduation, he plans to continue his work at the farm and greenhouse while exploring a future career in the medical field to make a lasting impact.

Santiago Ramirez Manzo

Santiago has contributed as an Education Student Intern with CITRIS. His favorite UC Merced memory is the semester he spent studying abroad in Manchester, UK, which he describes as the most enjoyable semester of his academic life so far! Santiago is receiving a B.S. in Computer Science and plans to work and travel while exploring grad school options after graduation.
