About Us
Mission
To cultivate crops and students’ minds through hands-on learning, providing real-world opportunities to contribute to the farm’s development, fostering a deep understanding of sustainable agriculture, and nurturing creativity. UC Merced aims to serve the San Joaquin Valley in agtech adoption and climate adaptation to serve growers, farmworkers, and the community.
Our Goals
- Study with rich data and engage with students and researchers.
- Test and develop tech for decision-making and resource management.
- Grow food and connect people with their food system.
AES Designation
The University of California, Merced became one of the newest campuses in the system to be named an Agricultural Experiment Station (AES). It has been over 75 years that a campus has earned this designation.
The AES mission is to have “a system of campus-based scientists with the mission to develop cutting-edge new knowledge and technologies to address agricultural, natural resources, and health issues”.
History
What is now designated as the ESF land was previously rangeland used for cattle. Our dedicated team prepared the soil with seven thorough tillage passes before sowing a winter forage mix of wheat and oats. In spring 2024, row crops like tomatoes and squash are planted on the farm to supply award-winning Chef Mitch Vanagaten with fresh vegetables for students and visitors to campus.
Future
Looking ahead, the ESF envisions a future where technology, sustainability, and community collaboration converge. Our vision encompasses leveraging innovative technology for increased productivity and quality while ensuring affordability, creating safer and more equitable work environments through upskilling opportunities, integrating multifunctional technology for sustainable farming practices, and collaborating with local communities to co-produce and benefit from technological advancements.
