UC Merced’s Professor Josue Medellin-Azuara served on the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) ad hoc committee that authored a new report reviewing the long-term operations of California’s two largest water supply systems—the Central Valley Project and the State Water Project.
The report examines how these systems balance water deliveries for agriculture, cities, and ecosystems in the face of drought, climate shifts, and declining fish populations in the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. It provides an independent review of key management actions, including efforts to protect winter-run Chinook salmon, improve temperature management below Shasta Dam, and address the growing complexity of operating the Projects in an increasingly variable climate.
